In many ways, 1989, the year I turned eleven, represents my awakening to the fact of politics in other countries, both because of my age and because of what happened around the world that year. And the first step in that awakening was following the news about what was happening in China, at a time when news crews had gathered to cover Gorbachev‘s visit–the first from a Soviet leader since the ’60s.
