And the first step in that awakening was following the news about what was happening in China, at a time when news crews had gathered to cover <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mikhail_Gorbachev\" target=\"_blank\">Gorbachev<\/a>&#8216;s visit&#8211;the first from a Soviet leader since the &#8217;60s.
