My friend Eric Abrahamsen<\/a>, founder of Paper Republic<\/a>, has a new article on the International Herald Tribune blog<\/a> about gu\u01cen<\/em> \u7ba1:<\/p>\n

Originally meaning \u201cpipe\u201d or \u201cflute\u201d \u2014 the feathery bit at the top is the bamboo radical, indicating a section of bamboo culm \u2014 gu\u01cen later evolved into a verb meaning \u201cto manage\u201d or \u201cto be in charge of.\u201d If I were given only one word to capture Chinese society, gu\u01cen would be it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s a fun and informative article, and reminded me of the line of Xi Chuan’s I translated, \u6211\u7ba1\u4e0d\u4f4f\u6211\u7684\u5fc3, which I translated as “I can’t control my heart.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
