In <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Platform_%282000_film%29\" target=\"_blank\">Platform \u7ad9\u53f0<\/a> (2000), directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jia_Zhangke\" target=\"_blank\">Jia Zhangke \u8d3e\u6a1f\u67ef<\/a> about personal and artistic changes in Shanxi \u5c71\u897f province from the &#8217;70s to the &#8217;90s, he plays a theater director from Beijing modeled in part off the poet <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mang_ke\" target=\"_blank\">Mang Ke \u8292\u514b<\/a> (co-founder of the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/jintian.net\/today\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jintian \u4eca\u5929<\/a>, and whose poetry I should be translating soon). Xi Chuan appears at about 3:38, in disbelief that his troupe has never seen a train in person and berating them for unrealistic acting and individualism; at 32:31, interrogating a misbehaving actor about the goals of socialism under <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reform_and_opening_up\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;reform and opening up&#8221; \u6539\u9769\u5f00\u653e<\/a>; and again at 37:13, where his speech indicating the troupe&#8217;s future direction is, tellingly, interrupted by a solo flamenco performance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In addition to being a poet and essayist, Xi Chuan has also worked as a film actor.
