This translation, however, is considerably worse than the machine-translation of Xi Chuan&#8217;s interview I posted yesterday, though worse in an at times endearing manner. The &#8220;hermetic seal&#8221; poetry (German \u201ehermetischen Dichtung\u201c), for instance, is the computerized English version of the German term for <em>menglong shi<\/em> \u6726\u80e7\u8bd7, which in English should be Obscure Poetry (often misleadingly translated as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Misty_Poets\" target=\"_blank\">Misty Poetry<\/a>&#8220;), the name of the poetry movement that emerged in China after the Cultural Revolution. And consider how the \u6211&#8212;-\u4e0d&#8212;-\u76f8&#8212;-\u4fe1 of\u00a0Bei Dao \u5317\u5cf6 comes out in English via the German: &#8220;I tell you, world, \/ I &#8211; think &#8211; not!&#8221; (for my translation with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.claytoneshleman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clayton Eshleman <\/a>of this <a href=\"http:\/\/paper-republic.org\/authors\/bei-dao\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bei Dao <\/a>poem, see <a href=\"http:\/\/poemsandpoetics.blogspot.com\/2009\/10\/bei-dao-four-poems-newly-translated.html\" target=\"_blank\">this <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackwidowpress.com\/Endure.htm\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>).
