In honor of Burton Watson\u2019s passing, <\/span>I am collecting statements and memories from friends and fans, to be posted as they come in. The following poem is by Sam Hamill, his entry in <\/em>Salutations; a Festschrift for Burton Watson<\/a> <\/b>(Ahadada \/ Ekleksographia, 2015):<\/em><\/p>\n

Salutation to Burton Watson<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

So very much learned<\/em>
\n from the feet of a master\u2014<\/em>
\n the fall of the Ch\u2019in,<\/em>
\n the rise of the T\u2019ang and Sung,<\/em>
\n tales from Masters Chuang and K\u2019ung.<\/em><\/p>\n

The long dusty roads<\/em>
\n of the various poets<\/em>
\n and monks, and sutras<\/em>
\n chanted, the <\/em>sake cups filled<\/em>
\n with kinship and harmonies,<\/em><\/p>\n

Hardships remembered.<\/em>
\n It is December, the moon<\/em>
\n full, snow turned to ice<\/em>
\n on the frozen ground. I raise<\/em>
\n a cup of good <\/em>Nihonshu<\/p>\n

To a master, a<\/em>
\n lifetime\u2019s companionship in<\/em>
\n wandering borders.<\/em>
\n Through hard times and good, decade<\/em>
\n by decade, when my heart yearned<\/em><\/p>\n

For good company,<\/em>
\n I always knew where to turn.<\/em>
\n Tonight, just a cup<\/em>
\n below Li Po\u2019s cold clear moon\u2014<\/em>
\n because it is impossible<\/em>
\n to drink alone.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
