\"\"<\/a>For the centenary of SOAS <\/a>G\u00f6ran Malmqvist talks about translation and SOAS:<\/p>\n

When asked what his views are on the art of translating he responds: \u201cWorld literature is translation and translation is world literature \u2013 without translation there is no world literature, and that is true.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explains: \u201cAs far as Chinese literature is concerned there are too few translators and there are too many who are not really qualified as translators. And there are translators who refuse to accept the very important double responsibility of a translator: the responsibility towards the original author\u2026 and then his responsibility towards his own readers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe must be honest \u2013 he mustn\u2019t add anything and he mustn\u2019t detract anything and he mustn\u2019t normalise \u2013 normalisation is a deadly sin of a translator. American publishers will simply say they refuse to accept this ending \u2013 it\u2019s not good enough, it\u2019s not positive enough \u2013 and the translator will happily change it or cut it out and that makes me very angry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
