Zhiqing<\/i> \u77e5\u9752 writers are often considered by literary critics as a generation who express a profound sense of nostalgia in their writing. Yanjie Wang\u2019s dissertation The \u201cSent-down\u201d Vision: Poetics and Politics of <\/i>Zhiqing Literature in Post-Mao China<\/i> is an insightful and probing study that challenges this conventional yet still prevalent view of zhiqing<\/i> literature. Defining the zhiqing<\/i> generation rather as rootless and displaced, Wang skillfully investigates what she calls the \u201csent-down\u201d vision of the zhiqing<\/i> writers. She convincingly demonstrates that such a vision is enabled and enriched by zhiqing<\/i>s\u2019 decade-long rustication experience and that the past associated with the sent-down experience is invoked not simply to express nostalgic feelings but rather to offer a \u201ccritique of contemporary China\u2019s massive modernization project\u201d as driven by developmentalism, materialism, and consumerism (p. 1).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
